Cold Distant Shore

about

Taken from OVER TEN THOUSAND SKIES, the second PHOENIX ROAD album, Cold Distant Shore is a pretty dark song as it goes - despite its happy go lucky melody and bright and jangly guitars., it is .... DARK.

It started with a really disturbing dream... I was seeing the back of this strange man.. He was standing on this cold lonely beach, just looking out to sea. This place was beyond desolate, kinda post apocalypse .. as if it was at the very edge of the world (if the world was flat that is)!

Well I couldn't get that 'dark-vision' out of my head and then months (years)? later iI realised maybe I was looking at a vision myself in some distant future... not nice really, but I think we all get a bit of anxiety about what kind of future we're all heading for.

The verses are like a collection little pictures of day-to-day life... good times flying by, boredom, general nonsense and even childhood flashbacks to a sunny day in the seventies.

Well hope, I didn't put a downer on really upbeat little tune
Tom (just spreading the joy here)

lyrics

Cold Distant Shore

Falling like rain in the afternoon
The days and months passed so soon
And so it was behind old Barton road
Deep in the night down on that old street
Creeping back on heavy feet
Didn't want to wake all the babies
Never quite the same as other sheep
On outside, looking back and in

Don't wanna become that dark vision that I saw
Don’t wanna be the man that stands on that cold distant shore

Here in the suburban desert land
There's no dancing in the street
Just the drone of cutting machines
There goes that man calling out the name
Of his cat that's lost again
Excitement is the rage around here
Well all I do is lie myself
So that I'm truthful when I speak

Don't wanna become that dark vision that I saw
Don’t wanna be the man that stands on that cold distant shore

I see my shadow in front of me
Triggers a faint memory
Of the summer of 76
Cracks in the path and the smell of tar
Couldn't sit down in the car
Now we're told it's the end of the world
There's no need for tears or laughter
Just gotta get from A to B

Don't wanna become that dark vision that I saw
Don’t wanna be the man that stands on that cold distant shore

On that cold distant shore
